Practical Strategies for Reducing Anxiety and Defiant Behaviors in the Classroom

Presenter:  Jessica Minahan, Med, BCBA

NIH reports that 33.9% of teenagers have had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime.  Heroic teachers are facing this challenge with virtually no training in mental health and behavioral principles.  Administrators are often in the difficult position of mentoring a distressed teacher who is struggling to support an anxious student.  It is optimal for administrators to be able to know and suggest practical and effective interventions that allow students to gain competency and reduce inappropriate behavior.  With these skills, administrators may be able to avoid punitive measures or restrictive settings by supporting their teachers to respond in more effective ways.

Through the use of case studies, humorous stories, and examples of common challenging situations, participants will learn easy-to-implement preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for reducing anxiety, increasing self-regulation, accurate thinking, and self-monitoring.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the impact of anxiety on a child’s learning and behavior.
  2. Participants will describe common antecedents for anxiety-related behavior in students.
  3. Describe why common teacher practices and interventions may not always work for students with anxiety-related behavior.
  4. Learn effective preventative tools, strategies, and interventions that will promote self-regulation, initiation, and anxiety management in students.
