Inclusive by Design: A Practical Guide to SDI, LRE, and Meaningful Access

Tuesday Presentation:
This session will provide participants with an early rollout of key concepts and practical guidance from MAASE’s forthcoming publication, Inclusive by Design: A Practical Guide to SDI, LRE, and Meaningful Access. Grounded in IDEA requirements, Michigan Department of Education guidance, and current best practices, the publication focuses on strengthening understanding and implementation of specially designed instruction (SDI), Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), inclusive practices, and meaningful access for students with disabilities. Participants will explore core themes from the publication, including determining SDI within the IEP, aligning instruction to grade-level standards, strengthening inclusive systems, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and ensuring instructional practices lead to improved student outcomes.

Throughout the session, participants will engage with practical examples, implementation scenarios, and systems-level considerations designed to help bridge the gap between compliance and meaningful instructional practice. Additional focus areas will include SDI within inclusive settings and MTSS frameworks, collaborative planning structures, instructional decision-making, leadership moves that support inclusive systems, and tools for continuous improvement and fidelity of implementation. Attendees will leave with an increased understanding of the publication’s framework and practical ideas they can begin using to strengthen SDI, LRE, and inclusive practices within their local contexts.

Developing Leaders is THE place to solve current problems of practice with other MAASE members. Topics for this informal "Ed Camp" opportunity are brainstormed the day prior. Notes are taken to capture the information and resources shared by fellow MAASE members on the hot topic of the day.  Participants will have the opportunity to select two topics that are the most relevant to their current work, one from 8:30-9:15 am and one from 9:30-10:15 am.

General Membership Meeting immediately follows the Developing Leaders session where you will hear state level updates as well as updates from our lobbyist. You will also hear updates from the President on the Board meetings, current MAASE work and have the opportunity to give input on the direction of the organization.
