Paraeducator Learning Series
The Michigan Association of Administrators of Special Education (MAASE) is proud to introduce the Paraeducator Professional Learning Series, a comprehensive initiative designed to enhance the training, growth, supervision, and feedback for paraeducators across Michigan.
Rooted in Research and Best Practices
This professional learning series is built upon the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) Core Competencies for Special Education Paraeducators. These competencies outline the critical skills and knowledge paraeducators need to effectively support students with disabilities in today’s PK-12 classrooms. Additionally, the series integrates:
- The CEC’s High Leverage Practices (HLPs) in special education to guide critical practices.
- The CEC Special Education Paraeducator Assessment and Evaluation Toolkit, providing a systematic framework for professional growth.
A Leveled Approach to Learning
Guided by MAASE leadership and informed by national experts, the Paraeducator Professional Learning Series offers a leveled system of professional development tailored to meet the unique needs of paraeducators. This collaborative effort focuses on:
- Best practices in special education.
- Continuous, research-based professional learning opportunities.
- Practical tools and strategies for success.
Two-Stage Implementation
The Paraeducator Learning Series is structured into two distinct stages:
-
Train the Trainer Program
In this initial stage, individuals are trained and certified to become trainers of the series’ content. These trainers will serve as key leaders, preparing paraeducators to excel in their roles. The first Train the Trainer session launches on January 8, 2025. -
Paraeducator Training Sessions
Once certified, trainers will deliver high-quality learning experiences to groups of paraeducators across Michigan, equipping them with the tools to provide safe, effective, and meaningful support for students with disabilities.

Supporting Michigan’s Paraeducators
The Paraeducator Professional Learning Series is a grant-funded project through the State of Michigan, reflecting a commitment to improving educational outcomes for students with disabilities by investing in the development of paraeducators.
“As someone who has been in the field for about 25 years, how we support our paraeducators is a critical component to student success and is something that we want to streamline for districts.”
– Karlie Parker
Associate Superintendent of Special Education, Muskegon Area ISD
