LRE and General Supervision - Prioritizing Placement

December Professional Learning

Tuesday, December 8, 2026 at 9:00 AM (EST) to Wednesday, December 9, 2026 at 12:30 PM (EST)

Event Details

Tuesday Presentation:

This full-day professional learning experience will explore Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) through the lens of Michigan’s General Supervision System and the state’s current priority areas for improving outcomes for students with disabilities. During the morning general session, participants will examine the requirements and purpose of the General Supervision System, review this year’s identified priorities, and discuss how districts can strengthen inclusive practices, compliance, and student outcomes through aligned systems and intentional leadership.

In the afternoon, participants will engage in breakout sessions organized around the four priority areas identified by MDE: Instructional Access and Inclusive Practices; LRE Decision-Making and IEP Team Integrity; Prevention, Discipline, and Tiered Supports; and Graduation. These smaller sessions will allow participants to explore challenges, promising practices, implementation strategies, and collaborative approaches in greater depth while networking with colleagues facing similar priorities. Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of Michigan’s expectations within the General Supervision System and practical ideas for strengthening inclusive systems and supports within their local districts.

Wednesday Presentations:
Developing Leaders is THE place to solve current problems of practice with other MAASE members. Topics for this informal "Ed Camp" opportunity are brainstormed the day prior. Notes are taken to capture the information and resources shared by fellow MAASE members on the hot topic of the day.  Participants will have the opportunity to select two topics that are the most relevant to their current work, one from 8:30-9:15 am and one from 9:30-10:15 am.

Immediately following the Developing Leaders session is the General Membership Meeting where you will hear state level updates from the Michigan Department of Education Office of Special Education and our lobbyist. You will also hear updates from the MAASE President, Tina Lawson on the Board meetings and current MAASE work.
