High Leverage Practices

What is this professional learning about?

Michigan’s statewide High Leverage Practice (HLP) Training is a new, transformative professional learning opportunity for special education and general education teachers. This initiative is the first of its kind in the state to provide structured, team-based, and practice-driven training on evidence-based instructional strategies designed to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.

Who is this professional learning for?

This training is intended for instructional teams that may include:

  • Special education teachers, general education teachers, Instructional coaches, teacher consultants, administrators, or higher education partners

Why get involved?

This professional learning opportunity will provide deep knowledge of how to intentionally support student needs—academically and behaviorally to ensure least restrictive environment.

  • Boost retention by building professional learning networks during trainings

  • Improve student outcomes with evidence-based, high-fidelity instruction

  • Build local capacity to scale and sustain implementation of researched based instructional strategies

  • Staff will walk away with deeper instructional knowledge, confidence to apply practices immediately, and a plan to continue improving practice in your setting.

When does it happen?

The first pilot cohort launches in September 2025 with regional trainers across Michigan.  After this first year of the pilot, training opportunities will be available across the state beginning in the Fall of 2026.

How do you get involved?

Districts across Michigan are invited to send educator teams to participate in the initial pilot of the High-Leverage Practices (HLP) training, launching in August 2025.
